Essentially your GPU stopped working but you managed to salvage an older one that’s likely not very good. You’re also considering whether to use your physical NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ with 512MB or the built-in graphics on the Gigabyte GA 78LMT S2. I understand this is confusing, but let me clarify.

Both options are poor choices, essentially ending up as e-waste. The 9800 GTX+ seems marginally better than the built-in model, but unless you already have the 9800 GTX+, it's smarter to opt for the onboard unit and save your money on something genuinely valuable.

If you have the item, consider testing both options and determine which performs better; the 9800 GTX+ should generally be quicker.

Someone also asked if cleaning dust from a GPU helps. It’s not fully dead—you can boot and run Windows, though there are visible lines on the screen, just a few and noticeable.

I've noticed some unusual occurrences when fixing cards; if a metal flake sticks to the surface, it might be causing shorts and problems, though that's not something I'd rely on. Apparently, the card you were working with was a GTX 770, which is about nine years old. Generally, GPUs last around five to seven years, so it's inevitable something would happen eventually.

Sure, I understand your concern. The life expectancy for a 9800 would depend on various factors, but it's hard to predict accurately without specific details. It might be influenced by how well it's maintained and used. If you're unsure about GPUs, it's reasonable to think it could be a factor. Luck does play a role sometimes!

It seems like you're reflecting on a past situation. Maybe it was a better experience overall, or perhaps you weren't as involved.

I understand you're concerned about potential damage from your GPU issues. It's good you're thinking about how these problems might affect basic tasks. Let me know if you'd like advice on managing this situation.

The graphics card is a 9800GT, not a GTX. The built-in display features ATI Radeon HD 3000, which is quite outdated—maybe it works at 720p. Those lines on the screen might come from a faulty cable. If they persist, the GPU (9800GT) likely has a Vmem issue.
