Hi, can you overclock your Q9500 CPU? Would it be possible through BIOS or do you need some software?

I mainly deal with Dells, though OEM computers tend to be quite similar. Here are the details for those builds. The Q9650 offers the fastest CPU and usually corresponds to a 95W limit.

No faster Xeon swaps were found either.

A CPU swap appears to be the most viable option. The rankings reflect systems tested, with the Q9650 reaching 40% and the Q9550 just behind, followed by the Q9500.
To overclock, you can attempt SetFSB or Clockgen, but you’ll need to locate the PLL chip number to apply them. Sometimes the MB is fixed to prevent this. Performance will be constrained unless you manage to raise the voltage, which may involve modifying the VID pinmod...

A CPU swap appears to be the most viable option. The rankings reflect systems tested; the Q9650 reaches 40% and is the top performer, followed by the Q9550, then the Q9500.
To increase performance, consider using SetFSB or Clockgen. You’ll need to identify the PLL chip’s setting to apply these changes. Sometimes the MB is fixed to prevent this, which limits results unless you manage to boost voltage. This often demands a VID pinmod, which is complex due to many voltage settings and CPU pins to adjust. It depends on whether the MB can supply extra power for significant overclocking. You might start with a Q9505S, which is affordable now—it’s a 65W CPU that gives you a 30W advantage for overclocking.
