Hello, welcome! I'm just starting out with networking and about to buy my first home. I want to make sure I get quality equipment without breaking the bank. I'm looking for reliable products that last a while—maybe around 5 years or more. I need something simple like a managed switch with about 10 ports, plus a router and an access point, though I don't really need everything at once. I'm thinking of getting some POE cameras later if needed.

Could you suggest some brands or models I should consider? I'm roughly budgeting around $500 for the router, switch, and one AP, depending on size. I'm also thinking about getting the ProSE model someday. Thanks for your help!

I have a personalized configuration, so the modem choice varies based on whether you have fiber or cable service. Usually with fiber providers supply the modem, but you can also obtain one for cable through them. Personally, I favor using my own equipment for cable internet. Regarding routers and APs, I’m using an Ubiquiti Edge Router X paired with a TP-Link EAP650 Ultra-Slim AX3000 Wi-Fi 6. If you require more Ethernet ports, a gigabit switch would be ideal—but for my setup, the router serves as the sole hardwired connection, and only a few devices are wired. For upgrades, I’d consider a combo unit, but if you're aiming for cost-effectiveness, these AP and router pairings work well. The AP and router I own are solid choices; they’re affordable, feature-rich, and should remain functional for a long time. A TP-Link AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 AP is a budget-friendly option, while the Edge Router X offers more advanced capabilities. You can find these models on Amazon with detailed product links provided.

consider these options for a budget-friendly build. The TP-Link TL-SG108E switch with 8 ports is available on Amazon for around $30. For a PoE version, the TP-Link TL-SG108PE costs about $90 and includes 4 PoE ports suitable for access points or routers. You can pair it with an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X for $60, which many suggest for more advanced setups. If you're on a tighter budget, the Ubiquiti SYSTEM kit (router, APs, switches) is another popular choice depending on your needs.
