Purchasing a refurbished Ryzen 7 3800X
Hello guys, I have the opportunity to buy the above CPU real cheap, it has never been overclocked or used for gaming - it was only used for browsing, emails and some occasional After Effects (very rarely). Catch is it has been running non stop for more than 1 should be around 1.5 years. It had the occasional restarts or shut downs for a couple of days but other than that it sat in an office idling (not sleep) for most of the day and being used as mentioned above for 8 hours a day. My question is, is it worth buying? has the chip degraded? Any way I can check? Thank you in advance.
I believe that's acceptable, but why would someone purchase a 3800x? If you already have a B350 or B450 motherboard, I’d opt for the 5800x 3D. However, to address your concerns, CP should remain stable even with continuous use for over a year, though it’s unclear if this is cost-effective given the availability of new 5000-series CPUs. It seems there might be some confusion—just noticed the PC was running in an office setting.
CPUs usually function or they don’t; you’ll probably find the one that stops right after purchase, but failures are extremely rare. I’ve only experienced one personally over 14 years of working with computers. They do wear down and sometimes you need to reduce the voltage gradually, though a 3800x shouldn’t be at that point—it’s something that occurs much later in a CPU’s lifespan. For testing, you can use tools like Cinebench to push it to its limits and assess stability.
