Purchasing a MOBO or switching to the new platform?
Hey everyone! A few months back I upgraded my MSI Duke GTX 1070 ti to run on an old ascrock H61M-VS3 with an Intel i7 3770k. I’m able to play all my favorite games and run Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere at 1080p smoothly. Recently I noticed the PCIe lock on my MOBO isn’t working properly and the GPU looks a bit loose. I’ve put some cardboard under it to help, but it’s still a bit unstable. Also, my board doesn’t have USB 3 ports, which is a hassle. I’m considering getting a LGA 1155 Z77 board and possibly overclocking my CPU, plus getting USB 3.0 and front headers. Alternatively, I could sell my MOBO and CPU to buy a cheaper H310 board with an i3 9100f. I’m a bit worried about upgrading the 9100f later and its four threads might affect performance. What would you recommend if you were in my situation?
Choose a 3100 and a B450 Pro 4. If you're satisfied with the current performance and don't need an upgrade, consider a budget Z77 board or adding PCIe cables directly on the GPU to help with sag.
I’d upgrade to a 3300x (minor upgrade) or switch to a 3600/3600x z77 boards, as they were previously costly.
You're looking at a great deal with Ryzen. A R5 2600 paired with a $100 B450 board offers excellent performance at a competitive price.
Hold off for a newer model until September and consider the Ryzen 4000 when it arrives, or take advantage of heavily discounted Ryzen 3000 CPUs by then. The i3 9100f performs worse for gaming compared to your current i7, so skip it. If you need USB 3.0, opt for a PCIe x1 USB 3.0 card.
If you manage to find a budget-friendly Z68 or Z77, that's fine. However, I'd prefer selling your 3770K and DDR3 RAM and purchasing a 3300X with a solid B450 board—such as an MSI B450M-PRO VDH Max or B450-A Pro depending on your budget. A 9100F would be better suited as a secondary option rather than a top choice, since the single-core gains aren't enough to justify the extra threads.
3300x represents roughly three times the cost of the i3 9100f in my country... I didn<|pad|> to say, and I didn’t even mention the 3600... because I discovered a Z77 for 55 USD. I figured I could give it a shot... But I’m not sure if switching platforms is the right move.
I checked the options and found a Z77 for 55 USD. It’s worth considering, but think about your needs. The i3 lacks extra threads, which is a big issue, and the i5 9400f offers better value compared to the i3 in your region.
