I picked up a used Exos X16 HDD and installed it into my system. When I tried to log in, the drive asked for a password before Windows opened. After several attempts, it displayed "disk locked." I entered the password multiple times but still couldn't access it. Using DiskPart in Command Prompt didn’t help—it reported an I/O error. I spent hours looking into self-encryption and similar topics, but nothing worked. The seller offered to assist but warned that if the drive doesn’t read on his Synology NAS, they won’t refund me. I’m worried I might have misguessed the password three times. I tried Seagate Toolkit, but it didn’t recognize the drive. According to Seagate’s documentation, this model isn’t self-encrypting. Is this a good or bad situation for me? Also, I just want to format the drive and use it, not keep it.

Have you encountered this pre-Windows boot password request before? Any suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks ahead.

Sorry to keep repeating this, but I really need assistance! I just got a USB enclosure and now initializing drives in Disk Management or using DiskPart gives me "cyclic redundancy check" errors. Also, the Seagate "Seatools" app shows firmware version 0, while my other drives display correct versions. When I tried to update using Seatools, it failed, and even Seagate Toolkit doesn’t show the drive. Seatools lists Security enabled and locked, but my other drives say otherwise.
