Purchased a server but don’t know how to use it.
This question has been raised only twice. The main reasons to purchase a server are either for a particular purpose or because you discovered an affordable option with available space, allowing you to determine its future use.
Choosing a Dell as a gaming server presents some challenges. You’ll need risers for the GPU power connections, and connecting them isn’t straightforward. They mainly support specific models like Quadro, Tesla, and the AMD Workstation/Server line isn’t available. Overall compatibility is limited, but it can still function with some adjustments. A Dell R730 is on my list once I receive it, and according to reviews, mainstream cards like GTX, RTX, and Radeon might prevent the server from starting. You’ll likely need to tweak the BIOS settings, though there’s no certainty. Running a Minecraft server could be a viable choice if you’re interested. I initially planned to host it for my niece, but she’s moved on to Fortnight—she doesn’t have much interest in games, but she’s young enough to understand. For alternatives, consider PiHole, AdGuard, Home Automation, or Folding@home if you’re comfortable using idle cores. F@H will raise your electricity bill and requires additional tools like HWInfo. I had to reapply thermal paste on an older Dell R620, probably because it was factory-applied and at least five years old. I reapplied it on the 730 since I thought some might remain. Other suggestions include PFSense, PLEX, PRTG for monitoring, or Veeam’s free backup tool. Ultimately, it depends on your interests. Dell claims you can’t get GPU risers post-purchase, but I doubt that’s accurate. Make sure your power supplies can handle the required wattage. Regardless of the path, have fun!
Certainly! The question is asking about the intended use of a low-cost purchase.
Who's interested in testing what I've created so far? I believe I've set up a Minecraft server with a mod pack and some basic plugins. If it functions, I'll share more details about the FTB Revelations IP: 70.58.204.252:25566 Version#3.30 here.
