Hello. I recently purchased a Ryzen 7 3800X, Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4 3200MHz (16GB), Corsair RM650 650W PSU, and the MSI MGP X570 GAMING PRO carbon motherboard. I assembled everything with my one-year-old NIVIDA Geoforce RTX 2060. The first thing I noticed with the AMD Wrath Prism cooler was the idle temperature. It fluctuated between 55-78°C in seconds when nothing was on. So I swapped it out for the Corsair H115i PRO Liquid cooler, and now the idle temps sit between 44-72°C. Still a bit high, especially since online users report steady 45-55°C with the same setup. I only use default profiles on my cooler, which runs at full power during games and even in BIOS or when idle. I downloaded COD: Modern Warfare to check FPS and in-game temperatures. With low graphics settings at 2560x1440, I achieved 80-97 FPS and CPU temps of 45-78°C. It’s surprising I don’t get higher FPS than my older machine with an i5 9400F, 16GB 2600MHz RAM (same GPU) and a slow motherboard. Then I noticed the motherboard temperature light was blinking while my Mystic light stayed on. I tried changing it via DragonCenter, but nothing worked. My RAM RGB also didn’t sync properly, causing some delay. Today I saw my motherboard temp was high too—42°C in BIOS. I updated the BIOS, installed the latest chipset drivers, and applied Windows updates. I’m using a Fractal Design S2 Tempered Glass case. I’m unsure if there’s an issue with my board given the RAM sync problems, the IO panel light, and the overheating signs. If you have any other details or photos that could help, please share! It seems like your main concern revolves around the CPU cooler's behavior under different conditions. Are you noticing it doesn’t cool properly when under load, or is there an issue with the motherboard? When temperatures increase, does the fan adjust its speed accordingly?
Above the pin connector reads "CPU fan," which doesn't match what I expect. Yes, the fan increases speed when temperatures rise. As discussed earlier, my fans sometimes run at full capacity even when I'm just using a desktop or BIOS. It's odd that temperatures stay high without any workload. Even with the liquid cooler set to maximum performance, I can't keep my CPU below 70°C. My main concern is why my in-game FPS looks so poor compared to others, despite achieving 80-97 FPS at low settings.
Entry level 4K gaming with top settings. RTX 2060 Mid 2070 High end 2080 everything else runs at 1080P high FPS. The difference in IPC between 9400 and 3700 isn't enough to boost your frame rate. You'd be better off upgrading to something like a 9900k or higher that supports OC to 5GHz. It's too late for that... Turn the graphics settings up. Unless you're chasing high FPS, consider going with 1080P instead.
As the other person mentioned, low temperatures can be misleading if you're not paying close attention. If the fan speed is increasing, core temperatures are typical, and you're seeing high temps under load, the main issue seems to be good contact with the heatsink. Since you've already replaced the coolers, I assumed that wasn't the problem. A complete failure of the chip is unlikely. A sudden temperature rise of 10-15 degrees when switching from idle to work isn't uncommon either, because the fan doesn't start immediately. Regarding your frame rates—hard to say what's normal without knowing the specific game you're playing.
