I purchased a used 12400 from a local eBay today. I immediately spotted liquid metal on it. I don't prefer this material—it conducts electricity, is corrosive, and toxic. I'm considering returning the CPU. What are your thoughts? I've noticed at least some of those tiny metal balls on the back contacts. Mercury tends to absorb gold, making the area around the ball darker. There are other contacts with darker spots too. Are these connections gold-plated? I'm familiar with Gallium; it's unlikely to be free from mercury content. Gallium might share similar gold-binding characteristics with mercury. It can also pose toxicity risks. Cleaning contaminated areas can be challenging due to its sticky nature. Edited June 1, 2023 by leclod
Consider whether you can rely on the CPU based on your needs and concerns.
Modern gallium alloys are known as Galinstan, made from gallium, indium, and tin. You shouldn't consume it, but it's definitely much less reactive than mercury. It scores a plus one, particularly when moving through capacitors.
Not always included by default. Just give it a try—if it works well, keep it; if not, return it.
Avoid pushing the CPU until you completely remove all liquid metal residue. Once it begins heating, any leftovers can clump together and risk damaging trace connections. The person who used this equipment wasn’t careful—cleaning wasn’t done properly. Keep a detailed record of every action you take, as prolonged use may favor the seller’s interests.
If the prior owner was wise, still consider they didn’t apply protective measures like conformal coating or silicon putty, even if it’s mentioned.
