Purchased a pre-owned 2070 model; hotspot operates at 106°C with severe thermal throttling.
In short, I purchased a Gigabyte Windforce Rtx 2070 dual fan and the seller removed part of the backplate to improve cooling. They misrepresented the product as functioning as intended, only occasionally throttling. When I requested a refund, they refused and didn’t provide a return label, ignoring eBay communications. Eventually, I resolved the issue by changing the paste and thermal pads, which lowered the maximum temperature from 86°C to 77°C. However, the GPU’s hotspot remained consistently high at around 106°C, and the fans ran at full speed.
On Reddit, others suggested the cooler wasn’t properly attached, but I believed the backplate cut had two screws for better contact. I never owned a GPU with a backplate, so I bought it without knowing. The seller continued to claim thermal throttling was rare, despite the GPU consistently reaching 106°C and fans always running at 100%.
I contacted Gigabyte support about getting a replacement backplate, but they said they didn’t have any in stock. I’m seeking advice on finding a suitable cooler or backplate without a radiator for my model.
You already have most of the critical fasteners secured, so the remaining ones likely won’t make much difference. Would you consider replacing the plastic fan shroud with thinner thermal pads? Also, clean the existing thermal paste and apply a fresh layer of Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme™ in the right quantity?
