A few days ago when I returned home, my internet service stopped functioning. I performed the usual router reset, but it didn’t work. I tried unplugging and plugging everything back in without success. I contacted my ISP about the issue and reached out to tech support for assistance. After some troubleshooting, they confirmed they could ping my modem, but suggested bypassing the router by connecting my PC directly to it. I purchased a new modem and waited for it to arrive. It arrived yesterday, so I installed it and asked my ISP to help activate it. Once that was done, they asked if it worked, but it didn’t. They then recommended calling Netgear, the manufacturer of the modem, who said it came preconfigured and required no further setup beyond what my ISP provided. Eventually, I gave up and went to sleep. Do you know anyone with a similar experience or any tips on resolving this? Thanks.

So your modem worked fine yet you replaced it? Sounds like the ISP screwed you out of some money and you just needed a new router... Or I am missing something.

It seems the issue might not be with the modem itself but rather the wireless connection. The crowded Wi-Fi spectrum could be interfering. Perhaps another person installed a Wi-Fi router nearby, overwhelming your signal.

Router is from 2013, yet bypassing it and connecting the PC straight to the modem isn't resolving the issue.

Some points to consider about connecting your PC directly. Does it receive an IP address? If yes, is it a local-link address like 169.254.x.x, a private range such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x, or does it have an internet address? Does the PC's network switch light turn on? Is the modem's Ethernet connection indicator lit (the LED on a NetGear modem)?
