I'm just getting started on forums, so I didn’t realize much about this. I bought a prebuilt PC from a friend who got it from BestBuy after he stopped playing PC games. The setup included: an i7 7700 (non-K), ASUS Prime H-270 Plus MOBO, MSI GTX 1060 with 3GB RAM, ADATA SU800 SSD for the OS, WD Blue 1TB SSD, and generic ADATA DDR4 2400MHz RAM. Now I’m thinking about getting the ASUS Maximus IX Hero MOBO. I’m wondering if I need a new Windows 10 key or if I can use the SSD I already have installed. Some people say my PC has the original Windows 10 and it won’t transfer, while others think I can activate it through my Microsoft account. I’m not very clear, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Upgrade your PC and it may request activation. Reach out to Microsoft Tech Support, describe your case, and request reactivation. I’ve received two Windows 10 Pro keys this way. Be prepared for them to ask for PC control for a short period to verify a new motherboard. They might also ask for proof of purchase. Short version: upgrade your system, contact support to reactivate Windows. Note: If you must buy a key, you can find one for $20 from Kinguin or similar vendors.

Replacing the MOBO because of a defect from the maker. The friend bought it for a very low price, which didn’t really impress me—especially given ASUS’s oversight. I think getting a more expensive MOBO would give me better quality than the H270 Plus.

A few capacitors failed and two RAM ports stopped working. ASUS provided a $90 discount on my upcoming MOBO purchase. Also, for fun, what RAM suggestions do you have? As mentioned earlier, I’m running 16GB (two 8GB) ADATA XPG DDR4 at 2400MHz. I don’t want something flashy like the Vengeance LED, but I also don’t want something too basic.

You could simply return the item to BestBuy. Alternatively, you can download the Microsoft Tool to create a bootable USB drive. It includes an option to install on different computers with new hardware. If that fails, follow the advice of the other person and contact Microsoft to discuss further.

I’m unable to, because my cousin resides in Seattle while I’m on the Southeastern coast, and I’m not the original buyer with a receipt or anything similar. I ended up chatting with MS Customer Support via their chat, described my situation, and they advised that once the new MOBO is installed, just launch the computer and re-activate it through the Activation settings in the Security tab.
