Who among you has installed network cables and can offer advice or suggestions?
I need guidance on running Ethernet from a media cabinet to a closet above the ceiling in a 2-story house with 2x4 framing, about 15 feet long. I want to minimize drywall damage and make it easy to run the cable through the ceiling cleanly. At the closet, what’s the best way to route it down the wall?
Also, what size holes should I cut in the drywall to simplify repairs while keeping the structure intact?
1. Conduit
2. Install two cables and a sleeper within the conduit
3. Refer to step 1.
The issue always centers around how much wood you need to drill through and how to position the drill. They produce long flexible bits, but it requires a lot of skill to drill accurately when visibility is limited. You must also exercise caution when using a meter to detect electrical wires so you can avoid damaging them during drilling.
I discovered it’s simpler to conceal a large hole rather than a small one. This allows for stronger wood backing to reattach drywall. The small mesh patch holes tend to be more noticeable. In a closet, you can refresh the texture and repaint an entire wall since they are shorter. When dealing with a larger area, repairs are less likely to be detected.
Locate the electrical wires - sure! Don't overlook other cables, water pipes, sewer lines, and fixtures. If you possess the expertise and abilities, you might be able to identify the ideal cable route by examining through the fixture openings. A cell phone camera or a small webcam could be useful.
To reach higher I had to descend first. I made a tiny hole in the floor beside the router, threaded the cable through and moved it into the crawl space, then up through an interior wall from the unfinished basement to the second story. There was just one small opening to bring the cable down and a drywall cutout to fit the ethernet outlet. I’m not sure if there’s a nearby interior wall that could support a wire all the way up or if there’s a path beneath it, but if there’s a desire, there’s a solution.
