PSU experiences issues only during low or light usage, not when under heavy demand.
I’m trying to figure out what happened with your rig. It suddenly stopped unexpectedly while you were watching a video stream. The PC didn’t completely crash or reboot, and nothing showed up in EventLog. You ran some stress tests—no issues found. The system runs at 10850k with an undervolt of 0.075v, max draw stays under 230w during heavy use, and the 3080 Ti overclocked to 50w idle under load. The PSU is a new 860W Ion+ Fractal Platinum, and it seems the problem only occurred when the system was lightly loaded or idle (using Firefox). Thanks ahead for your help! Also, I’m worried about whether a power loss could damage your NVMe drives.
Power loss or reset during improper shutdown may lead to data or OS damage. Confirm if the issue stems from a PSU problem or a voltage drop. Updated March 2, 2023 by An0maly_76 Added more details
It seems like a power drop when using the OC GPU together with Undervolt on the CPU. We usually think about voltage spikes, but the opposite can also cause issues. I’d save the current BIOS settings and then switch to a faulty configuration just to test stability. If it works, gradually increase or decrease performance until you find a balanced state. For gaming, undervolting the 3080 is recommended—it’s shown to provide better performance thanks to extra headroom. Usually, it delivers smoother free performance and often outperforms most overclocking attempts. There are many videos online, but one from Optimum Tech stands out for its clarity and detailed examples of the advantages.
I would consider using HWinfo64 to check for any sensor problems. It’s possible you’re unlucky and the slight undervoltage is affecting performance under load. When stressing the system, think of it like opening the tap to let more power in—small variations become less noticeable. At low or idle levels, those voltage constraints might be more critical. You could also try increasing the voltage slightly and observe if the issue improves.
