Hey there! I've been using the seasonic focus gx-1000 for about six months now, and recently caught a sound coming from it. I'm checking the video attached below. Is this noise dangerous? Should I consider returning it? Also, the sound sometimes stops and then comes back on again. Thanks! IMG_0018.mp4

Are you certain it's coil whine? My fan bearing began making noise after six months, and I had to adjust the wiring a bit. Try to silence the fan temporarily to pinpoint the problem. If it stops, the issue is likely the fan itself; if not, there’s another cause and returning the product might be best. To stop the fan, place an object against the center spinning part—don’t just force a screwdriver into the blades, as that could damage them.

Coil whine is merely bothersome, not dangerous. Reach out to the seller if you're within the return period, or contact Seasonic support for assistance. Best of luck!

You can place a small piece of tape or a soft cloth under the power supply unit to block airflow and prevent the fan from spinning. This helps reduce noise without damaging the system.

I connected with a cable, twisted it gently, and slowly pushed it toward the middle—it functioned like a brake. Since my grill is large, the task was straightforward. For smaller grills, this might not work. An eraser could be an alternative option.

I looked and it's producing a similar sound even though the fan isn't rotating.

It seems like the issue might be coil whine, and you may need to get a replacement.

It depends on the condition of the PSU. If it's still functional, you might be able to use it without replacing it. However, if there are signs of damage or failure, it's best to follow the return policy.

Coil whine usually doesn’t damage the device—it mainly affects your hearing. You often manage it by playing music or using other noises (such as games) to mask it.
