It looks like ocz has experimented with DDR using this component. It seems they're managing to run high voltages safely without harming the ICs, which is good since it prevents degradation or damage. For circuits that don’t degrade under voltage, the IC won’t act as a limiter. Interesting but mostly useful for XO designs; I’d be curious about 1.8V+ levels too, especially if they don’t affect the IC or RAM.
