Hey there, Dmanschramm. I’ve been considering getting some security software for my computer too. I’ve been using it without an antivirus for about four months and haven’t noticed anything wrong. Do you think an antivirus is necessary? I know it can use a lot of CPU, so a solution that scans regularly would be ideal. I’m open to paying or free options whatever suits me best. Thanks!

I rely on ESET NOD32 for my security software and Malwarebytes for scanning threats. They work well together.

I really enjoy the later updates of BullGuard, their versions from around 2011 are quite impressive, though newer releases are also solid, especially when you compare them to Norton (which unfortunately my whole family still uses). To be honest, my dislike for Norton stems from it reducing your gaming speed by about 30% and then applying some kind of fix.

I generally suggest using a mix of malwarebytes, CCleaner, AVG, and finally adwcleaner to eliminate those bothersome toolbars.

I've been utilizing CCleaner for some time now. I'm excited to try it out!

I don’t recall the details clearly, but a while ago AVG performed an action that prompted me to reinstall all five systems I had previously set up. (I tend to be lazy, so it felt significant.)

Something capable of checking weekly or monthly... Automated or manual? If manual, ClamWin Portable works well—I’ve seen it catch issues Avast, Antivir, and Norton overlooked. @manikyath: Might be one of these tools. I was frustrated by both, which ended my experience with AVG. 2008 update: http://www.maximumpc.com/avg-update-inad...indows-xp/ 2010 update: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Bad-AVG-U...0264.shtml

I believe it might be adware, though my memory could be off.
