I use Avira—it's free and pretty much unnoticeable. The top antivirus is basically common sense, honestly.

For Windows 8 or 8.1, Security Essentials works well and stays light. Usually I suggest Avast! for protection.

On my primary machine I use Avira. On my slower computer I don’t rely on it, and the downsides of malware aren’t worth the slowdown.
