I've been using my computer for a long time without any antivirus software, and I think it's time to consider installing something reliable. There are free options available that can help protect my system effectively.

Honestly, the anti-virus movement has faded away, and more businesses are recognizing this. Most computers now deal mainly with malware, which includes browser issues, fake software, and rootkits. These problems are quite preventable. Adblock Plus can block many of these entry points by removing most malicious websites that try to download .exe files. While you can enable all protections, staying vigilant is key—otherwise you risk getting infected and the programs won’t perform well.

I discovered that using ad blockers and no-script extensions that restrict JavaScript—unless permitted—helps prevent infections. These tools block the infection routes, so my antivirus scans don’t detect anything.

For my safety and devices, I rely on a range of tools. I use Avira for antivirus and active defense, Malwarebytes for free malware scans, Chrome extensions like HTTPS Everywhere, DisconnectMe to block tracking sites, AdBlock Plus to remove intrusive ads, and Avira Browser Security. It’s important to stay cautious—if I began visiting risky sites and clicking indiscriminately, those safeguards wouldn’t provide enough protection.

I rely on Windows Defender since I don’t want to set up alternatives.

Windows includes an integrated protector named Windows Defender. It assists in safeguarding your PC by performing basic virus and malware checks. You might also consider using Malwarebytes, which is widely regarded as the top choice for removing infections today.

For a slim lightweight security solution, webroot is worth thinking about. It’s effective but can be a bit costly and might not be essential for everyday users. The way you interact with your computer often matters more than the antivirus software you choose.

I mainly rely on adblock and Windows Defender. Still, I check for malware once a week and run ComboCure every month.
