I attempted to use Ubuntu but accidentally erased my hard drive and lost my Windows 8.1 product key. Now I need a way to locate my motherboard for the key.

I don't know if it's a Dell PC or a custom build.

Reach out to Microsoft and inform them that your motherboard and hard drive have failed.

We're discussing whether it's a desktop or a laptop. On laptops, the OEM Windows key is typically found near the back of the exterior shell. I don't believe the Windows 8 key is permanently attached to a desktop motherboard.

I don't have a memory of installing Windows, but I can guide you through the process if you'd like. Let me know how I can help!
