My previous laptop stopped working because it was dragging its hard drive, and I’m thinking about getting a new one with Windows 10. I’m wondering if Microsoft can activate the new Windows 10 installation from my old laptop. Since the hard drive is no longer functional, I don’t have the product key, so I might need to contact Microsoft support instead.

It could function without requiring a call. However, if that doesn't work, simply place a call and you should be able to proceed.

With the Windows 10 anniversary update, you can connect keys to a Microsoft account. For a Windows 7 setup, try an accessibility option, then adjust settings and disable it. https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/accessib...s10upgrade I also did this for my dad's old PC moving from 8.1 to 10—it functioned properly.

If oem then your win10 license died with your laptop. There is a way to still get the free upgrade to win 10. They kept it for disabled people. You can google that, I'm on my phone
