Hello, there seems to be an unusual behavior with my CPU. Occasionally, while idle, it jumps from around 45°C up to 55-60°C, then occasionally climbs to 75-80°C without any apparent cause. The CPU stays at low usage and rarely exceeds 8-9%. I also noticed this happening during a benchmark test for my RTX 3080, where it reached 80°C despite being in the 8-9% usage range. I suspect something might be missing with my older setup, but it’s occurring again now with the new components I just installed. Previously, I used a 3950X, Crosshair VIII Hero, and GTX 1080Ti, while now it’s 5950X, Crosshair VIII Dark Hero, and RTX3080 with a Balanced Heatsink (Noctua D15 Chromax Black). The fans were two but didn’t affect performance. I enabled heatsink states in my BIOS and everything seems fine since I’ve built this PC for over 15 years. The issue appears to be specific to the new configuration, especially with Dark Hero and the RTX3080.
Replace the cooler. The D15 requires careful adjustment. Take out the cooler, wipe down the thermal paste, apply fresh paste, and reinstall it. Tighten the two screws in a back-and-forth motion 2-3 times until secure. I used the D15 and it needed some patience. Use only a small amount of paste—about the size of a pea—to avoid damaging cooling performance.
I mount my heatsink in this way (tightening a little each time) and I plan to keep it that way forever. Concerning the contact with the CPU, I’m completely confident it’s set right. Also, as mentioned, it hits that temperature quickly even when idle and running at 5-8% load. It clearly isn’t coming from the heatsink itself.

I would eliminate the cooler and verify the thermal paste remains effective. It could be dried up or applied improperly. I’d also run CPU-Z to identify any issues with the CPU.
The 5950x is recognized for its strong performance, but it's not experiencing unusual activity. It seems a background process might be consuming CPU resources, leading to the observed increase. The thermal paste is still in good condition but may not have fully covered all areas. I’d search for a CPU Z program that can pinpoint the exact temperature spikes, since the issue could be on just one core rather than the whole CPU. Was this a brand-new or refurbished unit?
I’d skip it even if everything seems fine—just look at how the paste spreads. If you added too little or too much, it can throw off the temperatures. Even with a proper mount, the paste might not be spreading well. It’s worth checking just once. Two main reasons people avoid this: running out of paste or being lazy.
