A faulty CPU doesn’t generate power itself, so it can’t harm a motherboard. However, the motherboard provides the necessary power for the CPU, meaning a malfunctioning motherboard could potentially cause a CPU to fail.
It's still not great in terms of price, but you can upgrade components like the motherboard and RAM to get a newer Ryzen configuration. Selling the old parts could help cover costs, and it might even give you a better setup overall. The Ryzen 5 3600 usually costs less than an older i7 7700.
