Recently my brother removed the HDD from my PC and Windows activation stopped working. I attempted to fix it by using the key I had (purchased on eBay) but it said activation failed because the key was used elsewhere. The HDD and Windows were the same, no formatting done, just installed again. I think I need to buy a new key.

Windows OEM licenses are tied to the specific motherboard they were originally installed on. You must purchase a new key when moving it to another system. To transfer it properly, opt for the more expensive retail license. Replacing the HDD with the original motherboard will make your current license valid again.

It's in the same MOBO, just disconnected and reconnected (same system). Probably a glitch or reached limit, but I didn't modify any hardware.

You might find some outdated Windows 7 keys that aren’t in use, and they can actually help start Windows 10. Just a quick note: Windows 10 generally needs the /a key, but any version from Windows 7 or 8 (or even 10) should work. I believe Win 7 Professional would be suitable for Windows 10 Pro, and Win 7 Home/Standard or Win 10 Home should also be fine.

I suspect the eBay key was generated using a keygen, and someone purchased it with the same key. They confirmed they bought it and then disabled your device. I acquired several keys from eBay—two valid, one already active, and another as a volume key. It seems you should opt for inexpensive keys and proceed with caution.
