Problems with window placement and inefficient use of display space
Problems with window placement and inefficient use of display space
I've dealt with this for a while and still can't figure it out. At some point it seemed fine—it worked as expected, probably tied to snap settings or the taskbar—but I haven’t found a solution. It’s strange because I’m pretty sure it used to function properly when I expected it to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
It seems like this issue started recently, though. The gap between windows and the taskbar is especially bothersome when opening more windows or using certain programs. On my laptop, it’s even worse with Windows Media Player, which sometimes opens on the sides instead of the top, but not always. It’s frustrating because I need that space for smooth window management.
Some programs like Afterburner and Steam remember their position and don’t show this gap, while others like GIMP and Metro handle it well. OBS also remembers its size perfectly. I’m confused about why different apps behave so differently. The screenshots you shared really highlight the problem—this gap is definitely not random.
PS: I ran dism/sfc/scannow but didn’t see any errors or changes. Let me know if you need help interpreting those results!
Windows programs typically retain their last saved dimensions. Try pressing the fullscreen button and then closing it. Both of these windows remain windowed.
ya, but thats the problem, when I put it full-screen, then exit... next time i set it to windowed it'll have the same weird gap to the taskbar again... the thing where i notice it most actually, where i know "it wasn't like that" is windows photo app... whenever i open it, it has "roughly" the right position, except this weird gap is now to the side , because its not anywhere near the taskbar... the thing i know it changed was me thinking "great how it always remembers the correct position " ive used it a lot then, always had multiple windows open, it kept remembering the correct positions... then it suddenly stopped doing that (no changes were made on my side) and I've pretty much stopped using the photos app since , at least for opening several windows as its too tedious to position them every time.
You're experiencing similar issues before, possibly linked to DPI adjustments in Windows.
yes, i did lol... that was like 2 years ago? then i fixed it somehow, worked *perfectly fine* until recently and now it's back to doing this weird thing and i don't remember how i fixed it i think its something with snap... but no idea, i think i tried every combination... seems im missing something else additionally. i wish i could find that old thread(s?) ... it was some button combination too , i think... the weird part that at least still works partially (cascading) but i don't remember that button combo that seemingly did more than just enable cascading (because when i set this now, with the right click menu, it doesn't fix the issue) hmm, maybe ... actually it's possible i changed that but only for a specific program (game) Again, simply put, to me it looks like windows *thinks* my screen is smaller than it really is... like not 1440p but 1420p or something... (and the issue seems to happen horizontally and vertically, i just notice it most near the taskbar apparently)
