Problems with the Asus ROG Strix X670E-I and Ryzen 7 8700G setup
Hey everyone, I'm facing a problem with my latest build. I've checked various forums but haven't found anyone else with the same issue. When I press the power button, the fans briefly spin up and then stop. If I keep holding it down, they run for up to five seconds before shutting off, even though the button remains pressed. During this time, the orange DRAM light illuminates on the hive attachment. The firmware on the Hive is version 15. I've attempted to update the BIOS to the newest versions (2611 and 2413), but nothing changed. I've also swapped out the motherboard, CPU, power supply, and RAM without resolving the problem. Parts list: PSU – Inwin Chopin Max with 200W, alternate tested PSU – Rocketfish 500W, CPU – AMD Ryzen 7 8700G, Motherboard – ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-I GAMING WIFI, Memory – 2x G.Skill Ripjaws S5 6400MT 32GB (also tried 16GB versions) and two 32GB G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo at 6000MT). I'm unsure what might be causing this.
It might be a power supply unit problem. I checked online and found similar info. When buying a new PSU, choose a trusted brand with a solid track record. As Linus often advises, don’t cut corners on a PSU.
Are you turning on XMP support? That might be the cause... keep the RAM at its standard rates and ensure the motherboard runs with "optimized settings" without any changes. Absolutely, that's what we intended. Just power up the PC normally (press the power button briefly) and let me know what's going on. What are you asking? Why should I care?
The 8700G is a 65 watt TDP component. If it exceeds 500 watts by default, something seems amiss. I anticipate it won't run at full overclock with my current power supply. The 200-watt unit isn't in a typical size, so I'd need to adjust the case to fit other components. The 500-watt option is arbitrary—I needed to confirm it wasn't the power supply itself. Servethehome reports actual usage stays around 150 watts: https://www.servethehome.com/amd-ryzen-7...~:text=AMD Ryzen 7 8700G Power, maximum power was around 150W It appears the XDA thread assumes you'll also have an external GPU, which this build lacks. I've never booted into BIOS with this setup, so performance should remain at default speeds. The hive attachment is a USB port that Asus chose to include bios flashback, debug tools, PBO, and audio controls.
But other parts also use their energy. It’s possible something failed during the initial startup with that 200-watt power supply. A specialist might be required in your situation. Would you mind checking if your motherboard displays any lights—like orange or yellow—and remains inactive? Please share a photo if you can.
