I start on Solus OS on my Surface pro 4 with Wi-Fi connected. After 20-40 minutes I lose the connection and Solus shows no available networks. I have to restart and repeat the process later. The only solution I found is using my phone's hotspot, which works as long as needed. I checked the Solus forums but they're down. It seems like a driver compatibility issue might be the problem. The software functions well in Windows and Kali Linux, but I'm unsure. If I update Windows, will that affect Solus? How can I update the proprietary Realtek driver on Solus?

Windows drivers differ from Linux kernel modules and MacOS kext modules—they don’t transfer between operating systems. The optimal method for updating a proprietary driver depends on your situation: contact the hardware maker for the latest OS-compatible driver, reverse engineer the driver yourself, or switch to hardware that supports open-source alternatives.

I’m unsure about disassembling the device or modifying its hardware. However, I’ll request an updated driver from the manufacturer and check compatibility with Solus.

If you need assistance reaching Microsoft, it might not be worthwhile. Instead, check if a driver is available for your operating system. In the past, with Ubuntu, some drivers weren't included due to proprietary content, but users could still obtain them. I'm unsure about the legal aspects, but on an old laptop I managed to download WiFi drivers from the internet—they weren't part of the official installation.

I wasn't planning to reach out to Realtek. It seems Microsoft isn't offering much support. If you're looking for a reliable driver for your operating system, consider checking official sources or trusted third-party providers.

It's tough to pinpoint exactly what you're looking for. Realtek may have a driver listed on their site. I'm not very experienced with Solus, but sometimes they offer various Linux drivers. I also checked the help forums for my distribution and did a search online. That’s the nature of Linux and OS—you usually need to look a bit harder. Or maybe you're already familiar with it.
