Problems with relying on USB ports as the main connection method.
I’m dealing with a somewhat unstable configuration. Essentially, I have a four-port USB hub connected to a switch that routes signals to both my laptop and desktop. On my laptop, everything works fine regardless of what’s plugged in. However, when I switch to the desktop and run something demanding—like loading an external drive not connected to the hub—I notice all devices on the desktop act as if they’re disconnected. The switch connects to USB 3.0 ports, but I’ve experienced error codes on the desktop that suggest a possible motherboard or CPU issue. These codes keep appearing until I remove all USB devices. It seems like a power delivery problem might be at play. But since the same setup on my laptop behaves differently, it’s confusing. Anyone have any suggestions? Also, a quick note: resetting everything and trying again often resolves the issue temporarily, especially when dealing with external HDDs. Updated: February 26, 2021 by Earl Dadanur
