Hi everyone, I think there might be a problem with my motherboard. Before I proceed with the return, I wanted to double-check. I recently bought an upgrade for my machine, specifically... ASUS PRIME Z790-P D4 WiFi &13600KF Rest of Build 4x 8gb Corsair Dominator Platinum Zotac RTX3070 Corsair HX850 Samsung 950 Pro Corsair MP600 Pro XT. After some troubleshooting, the system now runs perfectly with two RAM sticks. I've tested AIDA64 and other games; they perform well. However, when I try to install four sticks, it either fails to load or crashes quickly under any load. No matter which sticks I use, the issue remains consistent. Memtest86 passed both sets of RAM. (I'm using slots A2 and B2.) I haven't adjusted anything in the BIOS except enabling XMP (currently two slots, but same symptoms with XMP1). I updated the BIOS to the latest version. I've installed and removed RAM multiple times without any problems. The CPU seating seems fine. I also changed the pressure on my cooler, as it might influence stability. I've tried three to four pressure settings, but nothing helped. The socket looks perfect. The last piece of advice came from a retailer's tech support—I was told I might need a 4-pin CPU power cable, which I thought was only for heavy overclocking. My PSU only has a single 4+4 port, so I ordered another one to test. It seems a bit excessive, but I'm not sure. My previous CPU was a 6700K, and I was up-to-date on current build quirks, so I'm open to trying it. More power is better, right? I understand new hardware issues are rare and usually due to user error. Just wanted to hear what others think before I return the board. Thanks, Chris. P.S. The RAM slots are full for the board.

Are the RAM 2 kits compatible with a 2-DIMM package? They might work with one of them, though using two can cause instability. As you mentioned, your 5900X experienced stability problems even though tests like MemTest86 and Cinebench didn’t reveal them.

I'm not clear on what you're referring to. The RAM consisted of two kits purchased at different times, with the same SKUs. The only variation was one kit being v4.31 and the other v4.23. I've run them together in my older machine for years, currently having a 4.31 and a 4.23. I've been using AIDA for about an hour and fifteen without any problems.

The version change may cause issues. Combining various DIMMs is seldom advisable. My concern is that if the kits are 2x8 but the QVL doesn’t confirm support for 4x8 of the same part number, the alternative configuration could lead to problems. Edited March 1, 2023 by An0maly_76 Revised, more info

You might try using three sticks to check which RAM slots are faulty. It’s possible to encounter issues in one channel or find a defective slot. If A2 and B2 seem normal, insert a stick into A1 and test it. If it works without problems, move it to B1 and continue testing. This isn’t a standard approach, but it can help with troubleshooting. Also, inspect the pins in the memory slots—there could be a recessed or damaged pin causing the problem.

I hadn't thought about it before, thank you.

In addition, I addressed the problem by purchasing RAM on the QVL, even though only two sticks were available, suggesting the issue might still exist. I also noticed my front panel USB Type C port functions correctly—I receive a message stating the last connected device failed and Windows doesn’t recognize it. I tried several troubleshooting methods, such as reinstalling Windows and using different devices or cables, even switching to another USB to a port. Despite these efforts, the error persists. The port appears to be in good condition. I’ve submitted an RMA for the board and expect a replacement tomorrow. It seems there might be a minor defect in the motherboard affecting RAM slots and the USB 3.2 Gen 2 port. I wanted to verify if the 'USB 3.1 Type-C Port' with the 4000D would work with the 'USB 3.2 Gen 2 Front Panel Connector' on my board, as the connector fits the port. I also asked whether special steps are needed when switching motherboards running Windows 11, considering TPM and Secure Boot. Regarding keys, I’m unsure if copying them is necessary. I’ve searched online but found nothing relevant. Sorry for the lengthy explanation and the silly questions. I’m dealing with anxiety right now and it’s making me anxious about everything.
