Problems with PCIe 3.0 riser cables?
Problems with PCIe 3.0 riser cables?
Hello, everyone! To put things in perspective, I'm using a Core i7-14700KF with a Z690 chipset and a MSI 3070 motherboard. It's connected to a 4.0 16x PCIe slot via an EK Riser cable. Previously, I had a Z170 chipset and a 6th generation Intel CPU. The graphics card wasn't upgraded—it came pre-installed on a PCIe 3.0 slot with the riser cable. I was also running Windows 10 before the changes. Now, when I play Final Fantasy XIV at 1080p, my GPU usage hits 99% most of the time, and watching a video on another monitor causes noticeable stuttering and poor performance. This behavior didn't occur before the upgrade and wasn't present with a similar setup earlier. I've confirmed I have the latest drivers installed. Could a PCIe 3.0 riser cable connected to a PCIe 4.0 port be causing this issue? Also, how can I verify the riser cable is indeed a 3.0 model? Thank you!
Open the BIOS on your motherboard, navigate to the PCIe configuration and set it to Gen 3 manually. Using a Gen 3 riser between high-speed parts can lead to unexpected problems.
Apologies for the mistake. Just transferred from another browser and didn’t realize. Corrected it! It makes perfect sense now. You’re right about doing it in the BIOS—it’s a good idea. I’ll give it a shot! Thanks. The custom watercooling loop won’t work, but it will take a lot of time and effort to test without it.
