Problems with idle temperatures on Ryzen 7600x
Hello there. I built a new computer recently and wanted to share the details. The components I used mostly came from my previous setup to cut costs: power supply, SSD1, two 140mm case fans (currently blowing in), one rear 120mm exhaust, CPU is a Ryzen 5 7600x, cooler is Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black MOBO with MSI B650M Gaming Plus Wi-Fi (MS-7E24), GPU is PNY RTX 4070 with 12GB VRAM, SSD1 is Samsung 850 EVO 250GB, SSD2 is Crucial P3 2TB M.2 NVMe, PSU is Corsair RM750i, case is ASUS Prime AP201 with tempered glass, and I’m using it for study via browser and OneNote.
Right now the CPU temperature is around 70°C with only 25% utilization, and the CPU fan on the cooler spins at 50% speed. The fans on the right and left 140mm are running at 50% (about 1050 RPM). XMP and EXPO settings aren’t enabled in BIOS. I’m not sure if this is typical for this chip, but I’ve heard it can get hot. I thought the exhaust fans were better as intake, but switching them to intake helped lower temperatures.
I’m wondering if my cooler isn’t powerful enough. If it’s just a cooling issue, I’d like to consider upgrading to something like the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 240mm AIO, which seems to have good reviews online. Would an AIO help bring my temps down compared to my current air cooler? That would be helpful to know before making a decision.
It's probable that 28% indicates a minimum of one core operating at full capacity, and it will display the temperature of the hottest core. In Task Manager, right-click the CPU graph and select "Change graph to" - Logical processors.
I haven’t made any major adjustments, but I did observe my CPU at 5.3GHz. That’s quite high. I haven’t attempted overclocking and all BIOS configurations remain set to defaults. It doesn’t seem like any software is causing such performance.
5.3GHz works just fine; the 212 might not have enough power for the 7600X, which could cause higher temps. When under load, the max temperature stays around 72°C—still acceptable. You could adjust your fan curve to be a bit more aggressive if you’re okay with the extra noise.
I adjusted the settings by disabling virtualisation and svm, then reinstalled all the CPU drivers. It seemed to make a big difference. Temperatures have dropped to around 50s during idle time now. Occasionally I still experience power issues. This has occurred before but I assumed it was resolved. When I turn on the PC, it shuts off very quickly. After disconnecting the PSU and unplugging the cable for a short while, it restarts normally. It seems to happen after putting the computer to sleep. Any suggestions? Maybe avoid sleeping the machine.
