Hello everyone. I recently configured HDMI switches for my PS5 and notebook to connect to two monitors. Until now, the PS5 setup was smooth, but with the notebook I occasionally experience strange connection problems. In short, I’m moving from Thunderbolt to an HDMI 1.4 converter, then to a HDMI 2.1 coupler and finally to a switch, with both monitors set at 1440p and 60Hz. The monitors sometimes flicker or stop working, but it recovers when I switch them around. Could the HDMI 1.4 converter be causing this issue? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I also found a USB C HDMI 2.1 converter, but if I don’t need it, I’d prefer not to purchase it. This problem existed even before the switch was installed, but it was much less frequent then.

If I had to assign responsibility, I’d think the HDMI converter might be the culprit. Signal integrity problems can also arise with couplers, especially when using long HDMI cables. Without specialized equipment, it’s hard to pinpoint the exact issue without replacing parts or testing alternatives. There’s a lot of couplers in use—removing some could help determine if they’re the source. Updated December 20, 2023 by Wzyss

I considered it. But my PS5 works fine. At least the video output test says so. I faced a similar problem with my other HDMI 1.4 USB hub even before connecting it, which is why I opted for this converter. Edit: Just to be clear—I'm using a MacBook Air M1.

It seems there might be a small issue there. You can check by connecting directly to the monitor from your PC to eliminate display or cable problems. Otherwise, it probably involves trial-and-error.

Using the HUB I talked about caused the problem after I connected it via its Power Pass for charging. With the basic one, I think the signal should work since both monitors had issues that fixed by resetting the connection. Probably I need to switch to a better HDMI converter next time.
