When the game doesn't function, you can modify the configuration file at My documents/DayZ/DayZ.cfg to adjust settings directly.
I can also adjust it within the game, though this was only the initial instance.
You may use Notepad, which comes with Windows by default. However, for a smoother experience, installing Notepad++ would be preferable.
