I have an Asrock Z590 Extreme motherboard with a 10th gen i9-10850K processor. I tried installing a PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD in the Hyper PCIe 4.0 slot, but it didn’t work there at all. The computer didn’t recognize anything in that slot, even though it worked fine when placed in the 3.0 slot. I know my CPU doesn’t support PCIe 4.0 and the SSD isn’t either, but I’m curious—shouldn’t it have functioned? I was hoping for a better result with PCIe 3.0 speeds, but I’m worried about replacing the board if this is just a compatibility issue. I don’t want to disassemble the whole thing, but I also don’t want to waste money on unnecessary parts.

Did you activate PCIe bifurcation? You must enable it to utilize those PCIe M.2 4x adapters. Which port in your adapter did you select, as only three can be used on the 1200 slot because of Intel's lane splitting rules.

The M2 slot is designed exclusively for Gen4 SSDs and requires Gen4 CPU lanes. The 10850K model lacks those lanes, making it incompatible. It works only with a 11th generation processor. Check the motherboard specifications on the product page for details about M2_1 support.

I don’t understand what you’re referring to, but I’ll look into it. Just a note, this is the sole hard drive currently in the system.

Since it's the sole drive in the setup, opt for the hyper M.2 adapter instead. Simply pick any other m.2 slot on the robot (except the top one).

I need to confirm the slot functions properly. I intend to add more M.2 drives later and also have an additional SATA SSD available for testing.

The instructions say it functions properly, though it performs best when warmer.

According to the specifications, the Hyper M.2 port is compatible only with 11th generation Rocket Lake chips. The 10th generation models lack the necessary PCIe lanes for this connection. Refer to the details provided.

Thank you for your feedback. This version is easier to understand compared to the manual.

Generally, the Z590 boards with PCIe 4 slots are compatible mainly with the 11th generation processors. The Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Elite AX follows the same rule.
