I recently switched from Intel to AMD and upgraded my boot drive due to its high capacity. Windows isn’t allowing me to move over my license to the new installation, and I’ve tried cloning the old drive to transfer the key, but activation is still required. Since I originally upgraded from Windows 7, that might be the reason for the issue. However, I can’t reinstall Windows 7 for an upgrade because it doesn’t support Ryzen, M.2 NVMe, or USB 3. I’m wondering if there’s a way to avoid paying Microsoft again for software I’ve used for years. Also, if I purchase the license now, will it always be transferable in the future, or could I face similar problems later?

Your Windows activation key is usually connected to your motherboard instead of being saved on your storage devices. Before changing your motherboard, you should have associated your key with your Microsoft account; this should have resolved the problem. Have you attempted using the Windows 10 Activation troubleshooter? I've noticed it can be effective sometimes, though results vary.

It seems the tool isn’t working properly even though the key appears. It might be tied to your Microsoft account, but there could be issues with permissions or system settings.

You might be able to restore the system by reassembling the old components and attempting a connection again.

I've heard it's not possible to move a product key from a free upgraded Windows 10 version, but I'm not entirely convinced ^^

Installing Windows 7 on that setup would be extremely challenging due to hardware limitations. Upgrading later would also be difficult because of the constraints.

It would be easy to purchase a low-cost Windows 10 license, though this raises some concerns

They seem really skilled at disabling systems that aren’t connected through them. At our electronics shop, we can’t sell licenses anymore because they prefer selling directly.

I don’t grasp precisely what you meant, but here’s what I understand about those keys. They can originate from various sources and may be stolen. Occasionally, the same key is sold to multiple individuals. They might become inactive after an unspecified time. Recently, I purchased one as a Windows 10 Home key for 2 USD. What I received was a Windows 10 Pro key that I managed to activate successfully. I’m unsure what will happen moving forward, but for now it’s fine. EDIT : I also bought it for the same reason you mentioned. My Windows wasn’t activated due to hardware changes, so I encountered a persistent message prompting me to activate it across all programs and games.
