Information stored in RAM remains available even if not currently in use. After quitting an application like Mail, its memory is marked as inactive. This space can be reclaimed by another program, similar to free memory. If Mail is opened before its inactive slot is taken, it will launch faster since the inactive memory gets converted to active, avoiding slower storage access. This behavior comes from Apple support guidelines—nothing is wrong, just normal operation.
