Problem with Windows interface responsiveness
Problem with Windows interface responsiveness
Hello! I’m dealing with an unusual lag problem on Windows across several PCs and servers. In two cases, the issue appears differently:
1. On my personal machine (5900X with 32GB RAM and NVMe SSD), the lag starts when I open basic apps like Explorer or Volume Mixer. Even the task manager behaves slowly, CPU usage spikes, and the experience feels sluggish—almost like an old system. It’s mostly noticeable only when apps are launched, making it seem unresponsive.
2. On my server (24c/48t with 128GB RAM and Enterprise NVMe SSD), the problem emerges only after the CPU reaches around 50%. The UI becomes sluggish and noticeable, worsening under heavier load. Overall CPU usage stays between 50-70%, and RAM utilization is around half. This feels like an older PC or something that shouldn’t work this way, even when CPU is maxed.
In both scenarios, the lag isn’t tied to hardware or heavy usage on my PC—it’s more about responsiveness and timing issues. The videos I shared highlight these differences, especially on the server where it’s more pronounced.
Thanks for your help!
This problem persists across both my new and old PCs after fresh installations of Windows. The Performance Options switch provides a noticeable improvement, particularly on my server, though it doesn’t fully resolve the issue. It works well on my server but I wouldn’t enable it on my personal machine because I prefer the appearance. Interestingly, the UI lag also appears on Linux, which you might assume wouldn’t occur there, but the core issue seems tied to how each OS handles its UI. It appears the problem likely relates to the visual components of these operating systems, though a complete fix for Windows remains uncertain.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the version of Windows you installed. Is your Server actually running Windows Server or is it simply Windows 10? And did you use the same flash drive for both installs? I'm asking, because there has to be something common between these two machines that causes this issue and that's the only thing I can come up with. What else do they share in terms of hardware or software?
I have the newest versions installed on both my old and new PCs, and the server runs Windows Server 2019. I suspect the issue might come from the programs I've added to either machine, since switching to Safe Mode in Windows 10 makes everything feel much smoother. For the server, it could be related to virtualization combined with heavy usage—perhaps the VM has very few applications running. I don't think a specific program is responsible, but it's frustrating that this problem still exists today.
