I'm starting a fresh PC build and need a new operating system since WIN7 isn't supported anymore. Do I still get free Windows 10 if I stick with Windows 8.1? Should I go for Windows 10 or wait for Windows 10? Thanks for your help and advice!

Windows 7 remains available for support. XP is not. We don't have certainty about the availability of Windows 8.1 if you're using it now. If you're okay with occasional issues and needing to reinstall at release time, you can get it now; otherwise, consider purchasing Windows 8.1.

Windows 10 isn't completely free. Microsoft has shared details about this, suggesting you try the preview now and switch to Windows 10 once it's available.

I don’t prefer previews mainly because of bugs, so I’ll go with Windows 8.1.

Windows 7 remains compatible through 2020.
The future isn’t certain—some say it’s free, others claim it might cost money.
Holding off on upgrading doesn’t mean postponing your PC project.

Speedbird Windows 7 remains compatible for an extended period. If you're on Windows 7 today, stick with it. Upgrading to a new OS isn't necessary at this time.
