Problem with updating to Win 11 version 24H2
I retried again last night after updating the drivers and cleaning things up. I disconnected the second SSD and started the installation from a USB key instead of the upgrade assistant, but there was no improvement. The desktop part works fine, and the long reboot phase also functions, though the system restarts six times quickly before reverting. It took about two hours in total. I have several drivers for unusual hardware on this machine, which might be the issue, but removing them all would be quite difficult.
It seems the issue started around the reboot stage. Once it prompts to roll back, the update is undone. I’ve been removing unused software, particularly hardware-related ones, and just started the reboot to check for changes. Updating network and sound drivers—some of which were quite outdated, possibly from the Windows 10 era—might also make a difference.
I plan to update the drivers for the devices that Intel DSA or Asus don’t provide newer versions for with SDIO. However, I’m thinking about starting with a basic system check because it carries a slight chance of damaging things. The biggest issue is the long wait time, making it hard to test changes one by one and figure out what’s causing the problem. I’ll have to make big adjustments before trying again.
DSA appears to provide very limited functionality. I might remove it now after considering it. On my machine it was only used for a BT/Wifi card which I later deleted. I found the sound driver on Asus' website and had to manually install the network driver from Realtek since it was an add-in card. Their servers are slow; 5MB from them equates to about 5GB from any other source. I haven’t seen SDIO before. I’ll examine it more closely if the current effort doesn’t succeed. Generally, I steer clear of "driver updaters," though many I’ve seen in ads seem suspicious. Yes, it’s a significant time waste dealing with all this. Luckily, it runs on a separate system from my primary one.
Recent try also didn’t work—the same issue as before. SDIO has released many chipset drivers with updates, so installation is now possible. It also mentions a newer sound driver, which makes sense given the often outdated motherboard info. There’s also a long list of XTU drivers available. I’m curious about this since my system doesn’t have XTU installed yet. I’d rather remove them than update them.
I reviewed the list and found nothing relevant to my situation. It appears most or all of them would have prevented the offer if they existed, meaning what I have likely won't be covered by them.
