This has been bugging me for a bit. When one of my systems got offered it as an option in Windows Update, I tried it, it failed, and I tried some things and gave up. Later I saw it offered again, similar problem. Today it escalated. It downloaded behind my back without me choosing to allow it. I was wondering why my video encode was going slower than normal, as it did look like some installer was trying to run but only when I got the restart did I see it was 24H2 again. Reboot, failed install, rollback. So nothing changed. Anyone else encountered anything like this? Currently got Win11 Pro 23H2 which is up to date for that version. The error code on this occasion was 0xc1900101. I know I've seen at least two, and this was one of them as links were shown as viewed when I searched for it again just now. 3rd party places suggest it might be due to an incompatible driver, but where do I even start? It would help if it gave a more descriptive error. I have tried various things in the past, such as checking Windows with DISM/sfc, running the Windows Update troubleshooter. Probably more I can't remember right now. I even tried to reduce the hardware footprint, since some devices were no longer needed like a wifi card and no longer needed storage. Before anyone suggests it, no, a clean install is NOT an option. This is a somewhat mature install, and I simply can not go through setting everything up again. When the time comes, I'd buy its replacement and set that up instead. Hardware is the "productivity" system in my sig: i9-7980XE Asus X299 TUF mark 2 bios 3801 4201 64GB ram (mixed) at 2133 RTX 3070 studio driver 566.36 572.16 Samsung 980 Pro 2TB latest firmware Realtek RTL8125 based NIC Edit: To do list: Update bios to latest Update ME software Update sound drivers which pre-date the Win11 ones now I look at it closely. Update GPU driver to latest Update NIC driver to latest

The issue isn't about 24H2 refusing installation, but rather conflicts with apps like Explorer Patcher.

I'm not sure, but I don't have Explorer Patcher installed. It seems my Windows isn't changed that way.

I also have my primary drive that behaves similarly. I've attempted various solutions without success. Would you consider removing the second SSD with a Linux installation just in case? I haven't made much progress on that yet. It's always been my responsibility to handle it, while others' setups worked fine.

It won’t install if your system has conflicting applications or drivers. For instance, it wouldn’t work on my son’s machine due to the Easy anti cheat issue. After EAC resolved that problem, Windows finally allowed installation. I looked up the error quickly and the top result mentioned an incompatible driver. I didn’t go into details.

You can change the installation yourself, but this won't help if there are compatibility issues.

Noted that Voicemeeter was initially thought to be incompatible. Once installed, it blocked the installation process entirely. After an update, the issue was resolved, though uninstalling it completely didn’t fully fix the problem.

It seems you're starting a thought process. Could you clarify what you'd like to explore next?

After the attempts at cleaning I started another update cycle. It has done the desktop portion and is awaiting restart. I'll do that tomorrow as it is bed time where I am. I saw the other thread making the observation my CPU has fallen off the supported CPU list for 24H2. I don't feel this is the problem in itself, as another similar system (same gen CPU, chipset) got the update pushed by MS and installed fine. If the update still doesn't work tomorrow, I don't know how much more stuff I can cull before making the system unusable. To be fair a good chunk of stuff on it is historic and not regularly used any more. e.g. my gaming has mostly moved to another system, but I keep it around as a backup. The other observation is that whatever is causing the problem isn't blacklisted. I was wondering if looking at that would help, but I'm getting past that stage.
