I’ve been attempting to flash my MSI B450 tomahawk max 2 for a Ryzen 5 5600G without any hardware modifications, just using RAM and the CPU with a cooler. The process has repeatedly failed despite working with multiple drives. I’ve used three USB sticks, a microSD card adapter, and even tried formatting them as fat32 with renamed files labeled MSI.ROM. They all report successful flashing activity, but after ten minutes nothing happens. The drives are formatted to fat32 and renamed to USB, with all exceeding 8GB capacity. I’m wondering if there’s a setting or option I’m missing for the USB drives. I’ve checked all available BIOS firmwares since support for Ryzen 5000 is no longer available. I’ll be reviewing this again tomorrow after work (around five hours later). Sorry if I don’t respond right away.
B450 Tomahawk boards lack Bios flashback functionality when attempting to use it. Install a compatible CPU, flash the BIOS, and install the 5600G.
That board isn't compatible with BIOS flashback. You'll need a Ryzen 1000, 2000, 3000 series or higher chip to load it into BIOS and flash it from there.
The Tomahawk Max 1 and 2 models can display BIOS updates even without a CPU running, as demonstrated in several videos and highlighted during product promotions. The marketing material also indicates that there is a BIOS update button available, confirming the feature works without needing a processor active.
This particular function was the key factor in my decision to upgrade, since I’m starting with an i7-7700 and don’t own any other AMD processors.
