Problem with the working PC not starting after one week off, no startup sound and internal lights visible.
Hi
My desktop is functioning properly now. A few weeks ago I went away for a week and left the computer unplugged for a while. When I returned, it wouldn’t start. The motherboard had its lights on, and the power LED was always illuminated when power was available, but everything else inside the case remained inactive. USB ports didn’t show any activity, and pressing the power button produced no response—no beep, no fans, no changes in the LEDs.
After some time trying to reattach cables and RAM, I handed it over to a technician who fixed it and returned it. He suggested it might have been a short caused by a loose screw in the back of the case, which resolved the issue completely.
Since then, I’ve experienced the same problem again: no boot, no fans, no response from the LEDs. I’m still trying to figure out what exactly was wrong and whether I need to rebuild everything or just follow his advice.
People in forums with similar problems often point to a PSU or motherboard hardware issue. It seems unlikely that the hardware was damaged while it was unplugged, but since I’ve already fixed it once without replacing parts, it’s probably something else.
I’ve tried several things:
- Looking through the forum for others’ experiences
- Disconnecting all peripherals and the GPU during testing
- Re-seating every cable from the PSU
- Reseating the motherboard power cables
- Re-seating the RAM and attempting boot with just one stick
- Removing the motherboard battery for 30 minutes before trying again
- Using different power outlets
- Pressing the power button for over 30 seconds while unplugged (someone suggested this)
I haven’t tried:
- Replacing the motherboard battery (planning to do it next)
- Booting with a short circuit on the power pins—no instructions available for my exact model
- Adjusting the CPU connections
Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Fixed! By the first thing I hadn't tried yet. Got a new battery for the motherboard and now it's fine. I guess I'll leave this up in case it helps anyone else out.
Don't really understand how the repair guy got it running without replacing the battery. Or if he did, he didn't mention it, and also that would mean there's some other weird problem at work that's killing the battery since that was so recent. But, whatever, I'm glad it's working again.
