Problem with the RAM module connection.
Problem with the RAM module connection.
Long ago I upgraded my PC with a new RAM module (2x8GB), but it didn’t function properly. Recently, while swapping RAM and resetting the CMOS by removing the battery, something went wrong. My system only displayed 8GB of memory, even though two 8GB sticks were inserted (possibly without disconnecting the power). It turned out the DIMM1 slot isn’t working. I’ve heard about bent pins, but I haven’t noticed any problems with the slot or CPU. There was also a mention of a burnt slot, but in most cases it’s relatively simple to figure out—by checking for smell or visible damage. After the problem started, I tested other slots and found that for slot 3142, as long as the RAM sticks go into DIMM2 and not DIMM4, it doesn’t matter what’s in the other slots, since only DIMM2 supports RAM. How can I best determine the exact cause? I’m using a Dell 5680 with a 7-8700 CPU and the Blue Skull 17544-1 motherboard. Feel free to ask about any additional details. Thanks ahead!
All four RAM modules function properly. The 3142 DIMMs are compatible with PC startup via the screen. With one stick, it only works if the other is removed from DIMM2. Using two sticks, combinations like 3+2 or 1+2 provide 8GB of RAM from DIMM2. Three sticks allow 3+1+2 to utilize 8GB of RAM.
I think I should verify that the most recent BIOS is installed. If the problem persists after updating, I’d attempt to re-seat the CPU. Should re-seating fail and funds be limited, I’d consider purchasing a budget second-hand Z370 motherboard for testing. It seems either the CPU or the motherboard might be damaged.
I've already updated the BIOS during my troubleshooting. Next, I'll attempt to reinsert the CPU.
