Problem with the motherboard

I have a Dell OptiPlex motherboard. I took it out of its case and set it up in a box I built. All the components were connected. When I tried to power on the PC, it didn’t start, so later I realized the RAM slot wasn’t working. After removing the faulty RAM piece, smoke came out, suggesting the board itself might be damaged. I’m unsure why this happened or what caused the failure.

Typically, optiplexes or prebuilt units include a switch mechanism connected to the PC case cover (often a white push button with thin wires). This prevents the system from powering up when it's not activated.

Placing just cardboard beneath the module? No nearby water droplets. Are there any conductive materials like wires or metal present? Could there be any source of moisture such as AC, sink, or bathroom?
