Problem with the motherboard.
I own an MSI B450 GAMING PRO carbon max Wi-Fi ATX AM4 motherboard that I really enjoy. We experienced a power outage a few years back, and afterward my system stopped functioning properly. Having done some hardware checks, everything seemed okay until I realized I couldn’t diagnose the issue myself. I decided to take it to a repair shop, which confirmed the BIOS was corrupted and fixed it. The computer worked perfectly afterward. Now that I’ve been using a GPU for about 12 years, I’m planning an upgrade. I installed the new GPU but noticed it was running slowly. The shop suggested replacing the motherboard since Windows wasn’t recognizing one of my RAM sticks and the board was seeing both. They recommended replacing the whole board. My question is, could I just swap in a single 32GB RAM stick and see if it improves performance? Or should I go ahead and replace the motherboard?
Are you still using the MSi B450 motherboard? Which CPU are you running now? The B450 may struggle with high-density RAM such as 32GB, particularly at higher DDR4 speeds. It’s smarter to upgrade to a ~$100 USD B550 board rather than buying new RAM. The MSi PRO B550M-VC WiFi Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2 is a good option if you don’t need built-in WiFi.
My processor is an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X and unfortunately I needed the Wi-Fi features of the motherboard. I’m considering it later when I get it back since before I shipped it I checked the hardware and everything looked okay to me.
The Ryzen 2700X might struggle with 32GB high-density DDR4 RAM. It's not a guaranteed issue, but the CPU's Integrated Memory Controller in this series is weaker, making dual sticks more effective. Using just one stick could noticeably affect performance compared to two.
It seemed like my system would struggle, so I think a new motherboard might be the way to go.
