Gather the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool onto the USB you intend to use as a bootable drive. Ensure you download it into the same USB you plan to use for installation. When prompted, launch the tool directly from the USB by opening File Explorer, finding MediaCreationTool.exe on the drive, and double-clicking to start it.

This will simply organize the USB for future use.

Certainly, you might consider using an alternative flash drive or a different USB port on the motherboard.

I saved the media creation tool straight to the USB drive, confident it wouldn’t cause any issues if I reformat it. I also learned that downloading Windows onto a USB won’t allow you to use it afterward, even after formatting.

The tool won't boot if it's stored in the flash drive without being formatted for bootability. If you skip the formatting step, it won't start from the USB. You can run the media tool directly from the USB as if it were a separate drive. When you download the tool, it should let you choose to create a bootable version. Formatting the device—whether SSD, HDD or flash—will erase all data on it permanently.

You can still use the USB drive even after formatting it with Windows. The USB will still contain the installation files needed to create a new installation media for another PC. Just ensure you have the correct tools installed and follow the steps carefully.
