Hello everyone; today I decided to upgrade my CPU from a Ryzen 5 3600 to a Ryzen 9 5900x (the motherboard is a gygabyte B450 gaming x). I updated the BIOS to the necessary version, removed the old processor, and installed the new one. It started up without any problems, opened Windows Desktop, and then it crashed with a BSOD (stop code: WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR). After that, it restarted and froze on the loading screen. If I restart it again, sometimes it goes into Windows Recovery/Repair mode, indicating it wants to restore an older save point. Whether I click Restore or Cancel, on the next reset it either freezes again or simply restarts the computer without changes. I also plugged in my old R5 3600 and it booted perfectly, working without issues. I attempted to reinstall Windows, but it couldn’t read the memory stick (even though it was selected as the primary boot method). The memory stick itself is fine; I tested it on my wife’s computer, which booted into Windows Setup without problems. The only time it actually entered Windows Setup was after I tried it on her machine and then connected it to mine. If I short-circuit the CMOS, it sometimes enters Windows Desktop for 2-3 seconds before crashing again. Booting in Safe Mode doesn’t help—it still crashes once it reaches the desktop (if it gets there). BIOS settings are all default; I even reset them several times to confirm. The previous CPU wasn’t overclocked, and neither was the memory. Speaking of memory, I tried swapping the memory sticks or using just one, but nothing changed. Edit: Checked the pins—there were no issues (the CPU is brand new). Now, one more thing I haven’t tried, but can’t unless I buy a new PSU: The motherboard has an 8-pin ATX connector for the CPU, but my PSU only has 4-pin supply (no other 4 or 8 pins). There were no problems with the Ryzen 5 3600 either, and from what I understand, the 5900x shouldn’t have issues. Yes, the old one had a TDP of 60W and the new one is 105W, but 4 pins should be sufficient for a 155W system, which is well below my needs. How can I resolve this?

Check the list of members on the Gigabyte board and see which ones were active. Update the relevant BIOS versions accordingly.

5900x sets up 144 watts for stock configurations. Would you like to restart using this BIOS and apply default settings? Also, sharing details about the remaining components might be useful.

Sure, I tried setting the BIOS defaults but it didn't work. The motherboard is a Gygabyte 450 gaming X, the CPU is now R9 5900X (up from R5 3600), the graphics card is RTX 3060, RAM is Corsair 32GB, and everything is running at normal speeds. The power supply is around 600 watts.

The issue arises if the BIOS is older than F32; you should have updated it first. Check Gigabyte's BIOS updates. Would you like to run Memtest86 on your RAM? Try the 5900X on another PC? Can you send back the 5900X to receive a 5700X or 5800X3D?

I can deliver it within 30 days, similar to consumer electronics, but I prefer not to because I really need it. I also don’t want a lower CPU version. There are no problems with the RAM—I’ve tested it. : ( EDIT: I followed the update steps from Gygabyte’s site, starting with F32, etc.)

Zen 3 is selective about RAM. Solutions that worked for your 3600 may not apply to your 5900x. Your motherboard's QVL should account for this. Best of luck!

I handle various technical tasks on the PC, including those requiring the 5900X. For gaming, both the 5700X and 5800X3D offer better performance than the 5900X.
