Problem with selecting boot in UEFI
Problem with selecting boot in UEFI
I am using AMI UFEI/BIOS Version 2.21.1278 on an ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-E with an Intel® Core™ i9-12900K × 24 running UBUNTU 24.04.1 as the operating system.
I am attempting to reinstall the OS.
When I access the UFEI/BIOS and go to the BOOT section, I set both parameters to USB.
Yet the UFEI defaults to booting from internal SSDs.
I have the required image file on a thumb drive (I’ve used it before successfully) and the drive is connected via USB. The system has been inspected through the system tools.
When I return to the UFEI/BIOS to verify boot options, they are still set to USB.
The system still defaults to internal SSDs.
Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.
when uefi boot is turned on but your usb stick lacks an efi boot file (efi/boot/bootx64.efi), the bios will ignore it. you might need to switch to legacy boot in the boot settings (activate csm and set storage to legacy) or vice versa—an efi bootable stick could work if bios is configured not to boot in efi mode.
The image contains a file in the directory you referenced. It's noteworthy that when I start the UEFI/BIOS it indicates the USB is selected, however I executed this command:
*******************************************
c@ASUS690:~$ ls /sys/firmware/efi
config_table esrt fw_vendor runtime systab
efivars fw_platform_size mok-variables runtime-map
c@ASUS690:~$ efibootmgr
BootCurrent: 0001
Timeout: 1 seconds
BootOrder: 0001,0002
Boot0001* Ubuntu HD(1,GPT,f2e13133-adaf-4c13-add4-e2c88ede20eb,0x800,0x100000)/File(\EFI\UBUNTU\SHIMX64.EFI)
Boot0002* UEFI: SanDisk, Partition 2 PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x14,0x0)/USB(0,0)/HD(2,GPT,eed3de8a-acd3-4541-ba17-9014c007d874,0xb8b5a0,0x27a0)0000424f

This verifies the system isn't using legacy settings. I'm uncertain about the meaning of 'Current Boot'—for instance, whether it refers to the source or BIOS configuration—but 0001 points to the SSD and 0002 to the USB, while the boot order is 0001 then 0002.
It indicates your boot sequence should be: first the HDD containing Ubuntu, then a bootable USB drive. You might need to verify your BIOS settings since it's configured to start from the HDD first.
Everything is in order, thank you for the input.
As before, it was due to an operator mistake.
