Hello, your son is experiencing some unusual problems with his PC. He’s using Windows 10 Pro, an AMD 3700x processor, and the MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk graphics card. When adjusting the power performance to High, the setting changes unexpectedly and reverts back to the balanced mode. I’ve tried creating a custom configuration to test if this would help, but it seems to reset itself afterward. Any advice or guidance would be very welcome.

With an MSI motherboard and Dragon Center installed, the system will adjust the power plan to match the configuration in Dragon Center. Consider changing the power plan in Dragon Center to maximum performance (or save a version and apply it).

It looks like the adjustment was successful. I wasn't aware Dragon Centre managed the power settings in that manner.
