When I add an audio device, it repeatedly prompts me to choose between headphones, speakers, or similar options. I wasn't able to locate a way to turn off this setting in either the native Windows preferences or the Realtek audio control panel.

This is not Windows. This is your Realtek onboard audio chip. To my knowledge, there is nothing you can do about it. You can tell Windows to hide the notification, but that is about it.

Really, trying to hide the alert won't work unless I choose the right device type and press OK. The audio from the laptop speakers continues to play.

If you access "Device advance Settings" in the Realtek audio control panel, you can configure defaults and disable notifications as needed.

It simply displays the device type, which appears unclickable and grayed out.
